25 While 25

I recently stumbled upon my 30 Before 30 list that I had kicking in my little black book. My black book is pretty much my best friend. I mean, I write everything down in this sucker and if someone were to find it and graze through random pages .. I'd certainly be judged and given strange looks.

My 'To Do' book of lists is my 'must have' because I have the memory of a goldfish so documenting everything is key. I have my 'week ending lists' which look like 'WE-21-SEP-13' (I think I adopted this from work deadlines), my 30 Before 30, The Bucket List (Not the actual bucket list, but additives since it is never-ending), 2013 New Years Resolutions and the list goes on (no pun intended).

Anyways, I recently starting reading a blog where a lady had a 33 While 33 list. She's currently in her thirty-third year and is working on crossing some lines off. She also had a 32 While 32 list. How interesting, hey? I know you list-lovers like myself will appreciate this type of thing so I decided to do the same.I took attainable goals and challenges from all of my lists and made my 25 While 25.

I intend on taking this quite seriously and seeing how I'm only one-third of the way through my twenty-fifth year of life, I still get eight months to go tick tick .. check check .. and you can follow and perhaps create your own?

I think setting goals is key to completely everything and anything. I think that writing it down always helps, as well. I'd like to see you compile a list of goals and see where you stand in a year. See if you nod your head and say "why o why did I care enough to write that down?". I know that I've re-read things on my Bucket List and have said "what was running through my head to think that was worthy?". Though we change our minds and add or remove goals for ourselves, it's somewhat cool to think that at one point in time, that bullet point meant a lot to us. We wanted to do that. We wanted to cross that off.

So, with much debate for the last 2 weeks, my list is as follows:

25 While 25

  1. Volunteer at a race
  2. Learn to knit (and make my own dish clothes)
  3. Watch the sunset while drinking Starbucks on Signal Hill
  4. Receive my Personal Training Certification
  5. Receive my Professional Engineering Technologist Certification
  6. Buy a piece of property (a house or a piece of land)
  7. Run a 10-k
  8. Go on a trip
  9. Plan & host an occasion dinner or dinner party (Christmas, Easter etc)
  10. Read 5 books
  11. Do 10 push-ups
  12. Have a spa day
  13. Take a pottery-making class
  14. Attend a cooking class
  15. Teach a class
  16. Go to a movie by myself
  17. Help a stranger
  18. Make sushi
  19. Kiss someone in the pouring down rain
  20. Make the necessary arrangements to be an organ donor
  21. Bring a meal to a homeless person
  22. Spend a night in a bed and breakfast
  23. Pay off a vehicle
  24. Brew my own wine and stock my own wine rack
  25. See 155 on the scale

If I had of made this list earlier in the year, I'm sure I would have added others. I definitely would have had run another Tely 10 because I added '3 more Tely 10s' to my Bucket List in 2012. For now, I think I choose some challenging yet practical goals for my 25 While 25 list. I pretty much took them from my other lists and narrowed it down to the goals I'd really like to complete within the next year.

Do you make lists?
Do you have a set of goals you'd like to complete within the next year?

Guest Post: The Paleo Diet ... is it just a fad or fact?

For those of you who don't know, or have never heard of the Paleo Diet, it is essentially a lifestyle choice that mimics the food consumption habits of those of primitive mankind i.e. the caveman ... who would be studied by Paleontologists ... hence the origin of the name and this diet. If it didn't exist in pre-historic times, then don't eat it! The 3 main food groups that are axed in this diet are dairy (as Louis Pasteur didn't make his way into history until the 1800's) refined sugars and grains. The diet is based on the foods that could be hunted, and gathered during the Paleolithic era -- meat, fish, shellfish, eggs, tree nuts, vegetables, roots, fruits, and berries.

Why axe sugar?

The Paleo Diet also almost completely eradicates sugar. Unless you're getting your sugar from a fruit, forget it. Sugar causes an energy spike and crash in your system, turns to fat unless it's used immediately, and wreaks all kind of havoc in the body. There is also research in the connection between sugar and the formation of cancerous cells.

Why axe grains, aren't they good for you?

Canada's Food Guide recommends 6-8 servings of grains every day, but there are theories that government pushes this amount of servings on the population to support local farmers, manufacturers, commerce....and increased tax dollars. Grains have been linked to high insulin levels, and complications with Gluten. Victoria will speak to this point in upcoming posts once completed "The Wheat Belly".

Why axe dairy?

Apparently axing dairy completely is somewhat controversial and depends on how devout you are. The argument is that our bodies are designed for massive amounts of dairy consumption. Although it's the first nourishment we receive as children, there are claims that our bodies just don't need it after infancy. Also, the food intake of dairy cows is something that devout Paleos denounce, though those who are more mixed in their views still avail of dairy's dietary benefits, especially for those looking to use dairy as a form to bulk up some mass as milk has been deemed just as good (or better) post-workout supplement that many protein powders on the market.

The benefit...

Paelo's claim that the pre-historic human was tall and muscular as their primary duties were hunting and gathering food. The agricultural revolution changed history, and mankind as we see today. By adopting the Paleo diet, a more cut physique is promised due to the "clean eating" lifestyle.

The cons...

The Paleo diet is very strict, and will prove difficult to those who tend to be less regimented in terms of any kind of diet. Like anything, it's lifestyle choice and not a "fad diet". There are also studies that show transition to Paleo very difficult and reports of headaches, fatigue and overall lack of energy in the first month (kind of the opposite of what I would think). Other critics say that the results from the Paleo diet are simply aligned with good nutrition anyway. If someone reports they lost 10-pounds in a month because they stopped eating a loaf of bread a week, stopped drinking pop, and 3 lattes a day .... well it's not rocket science why.

One good news story...

I came across a very compelling story of Dr. Terry Wahls, a woman who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and is now treating the illness with no western drugs, but just by diet change alone. In 2007 she was bound to a wheel chair, and today she is participating in cycling marathons. She has since developed her own line of diet programs and books. For more information on Terry, visit her website at www.terrywahls.com

New diet I only discovered this week

While at the Dentist, my Hygienist was going on about various diets, and mentioned the Blood Type Diet. This diet consists of a plan to eat according to your blood type, and the types of foods you should avoid. There's not a lot of research in this, and because of it some criticism...but an interesting theory all the same.

Blood group O is described as the hunter. This blood group eats a higher protein diet. The group is alleged to be the first blood type and to have originated 30,000 years ago, although research indicates that blood type A is actually the oldest.

Blood group A is called the agrarian or cultivator and this type dates from the dawn of agriculture, 20,000 years ago. Individuals of blood group A should eat a diet that emphasizes vegetables and is free of red meat, a diet more closely vegetarian.

Blood group B is called the nomad and this group arrived 10,000 years ago. He states that this type is associated with a strong immune system and a flexible digestive system. He also asserts that people of blood type B are the only people able to thrive on dairy products; this is contradicted by the fact that while people with blood type B tend to be from Asia (specifically, China or India), lactose intolerance is most common among people of Asian, South American, and African descent and least common among those descended from northern Europe or northwestern India.

I tried to research into it more for myself...but I forget what blood type I am. :( Oh well.

Taco-Tasting Sweet Potato Casserole

Totally stole this recipe from one of my NLABBA coaches but I had to share it. This recipe is absolutely delicious and lacks the salt that most taco dishes have.

Ingredients
1-T Coconut oil
1-T Minced garlic
Cumin (judge according to taste)
1-lb of extra lean ground meat (turkey, chicken, beef) I used beef
1/2-cup of diced peppers
1/2-cup of salsa
1-medium sweet potato

Directions
1. Place 1-T of coconut oil in a pan and let melt

2. Add 1-T of minced garlic to pan and let sautee to get the most flavour

3. Add ground meat to garlic and cook. Make sure all meat pieces and separated and not left in a 'chunky' form. Season with cumin. I used a lot as I love the taco flavouring it gives the meat

4. When ground meat is cooked, add 1/2-cup of peppers and 1/2-cup of salsa

5. Grate 1-medium sweet potato OR slice into thin slices

6. Layer an 8"x8" casserole dish with half of the meat mixture

7. Place a layer of sweet potato over the meat

8. Place the other half of the meat mixture over the sweet potato

9. Let bake for 15-minutes

10. Serve hot

Ok, so I understand that some posts on 'recipes' seem a little boring to most and you'll probably never take the time to try anything posted on here .. but if you like Mexican food and you want to cook a DELICIOUS meal that will last for days .. then bake this dish! You won't regret it.

Bon Appetite, friends!

Currently in September

I got the idea for this post off another blog that I follow. I was recently told from a reader that the blog posts they enjoy the most are the 'randomness' ones. So what could be better than a list/survey? Sure ya knows how much I like to flaunt my self-absorbtion .. but you'd do it on your blog too, right? Right.

Current Books

Ha, hate that this was the first question. Yes, I'm still reading Wheat Belly. I find it hard getting downtime to read so I try to get a chapter in here and there when I can. I'm one sitting away from finishing so s'all good. I'm actually hoping to write a post with an overview of the book. I'm sure some of you won't be interested in the down and dirty facts of wheat, but I think it could make for one interesting post!

Current Music

Uh-ohh .. I'm getting back into the old school metal tunes again, I think. On the drive to Gros Morne, we listened to Indestructable and The Lost Children inside out. I'm talking hours on end. Driving to the West Coast and driving back from the West Coast. It was pretty enjoyable to venture with someone with the same taste in music as myself so I took full advantage!

Also, I still can't get sick of Florence and the Machine! They're my go-to for every kinda mood :)

Isn't she hot as hell? Hellooo

Current Guilty Pleasure

Almond Butter and/or Cashew Butter. Ok, so I eat 1-tbsp of almond or cashew butter on my breakfast waffles/muffins/pancakes but it is SO difficult to keep the moderation in check. I actually look at it as my piggy-struggle. I just wanna sit at my desk and go head and eyes into the jar.

Bulk Barn cashew butter = expensive
MaraNath almond butter from Costco = $6.97 (or very close)

Current Nail Color

Hot Pink by Zoya. I got this at the Hair Connection on Saturday when Tiffany and I got our pedicures. Love-love-love when you get a pedicure or manicure and they give you the nail polish for touch-ups.

Note: Newly painted and smudged all over my skin
Also, Zoya polish is sold at the Hair Connection for $9.50

Current Drink

I am so obsessed with the Zero Ultra Monster energy drink. I've mentioned it a few times before and I still cannot get enough of it. I'm aware that energy drinks aren't the healthiest but I can pretty much say that I'm addicted to these ol' bad boys! umm hmmm

Current Food

I'm sure if I was not restricted to particular foods that I'd have something different for this one, but as of lately, grinded oatmeal + 1/3-cup of egg whites + 1 whole egg + 1/2-cup of blueberries + vanilla extract + cinnamon + cashew butter = deliciousness waffles and/or pancakes
Yummy waffles

Delightful pancakes topped with blueberries

Current Favorite Show

I wouldn't be able to tell you the last time I sat and watched a television show to be quite honest. Months a go I was a religious Dexter and Sons of Anarchy water but I'm a season behind on Dexter and two on SOA (uh oh). Anyhow, if I had to pick, both shows would take the cake for this one!

Current Wish List
  • that I had time to blog more
  • that I owned a small fitness studio
  • that there was 34-hrs instead of 24-hrs in a day
  • that I had worked from the St. John's office rather than Long Harbour
  • that I owned an off-white 2013 Accord with brown leather interior
  • that I could do a chin-up
  • that I had a week off of work / workouts so I could just relax and enjoy pumpkin spice lattes and wear my hair in a bun
List stops there. I sould like a Debbie-downer (but I'm truly not) :)

Current Needs
  • a hair cut
  • a manicure (as seen above, I paint more of my skin than my actual nails)
  • groceries
  • a maid
  • a stomach like this:

or this... ya ... most definitely that ...

  • a two night get-a-way to relax and be stress free (what-up-Fogo)

Current Triumphs

Hiking Gros Morne Mountain (Shut the F up about Gros Morne, Victoria!! <-- as I'm sure that's what you're thinking as you roll those rude little eyes at me) is definitely on my list .. but as I sit and think of my latest triumph, it has to be that I've started noticing changes in my body from NLABBA training. That I've dedicated my time and energy and will not stop until I'm satisfied. That I said I'm doing it and I'm doing it.

Seeing a change in my body is slow going,  and there are a number of reasons why I should not post this picture but who cares, right? Perhaps I'll have something better in a few weeks.

Current bane of my existence

Leg workouts are the bane of my existance. I cringe with the thought.

..but we DO like deadlifts :)

Current Celebrity Crush

Pff, hands down it's Jennifer Carpentor. Pretty sure I think about her on a weekly basis. I was introduced to her in Dexter a few years back and was instantly hooked on her character. I find her sexy as hell and pretty sure I tell myself at work that I'm a Deborah Morgan. Ha, I used to say to a guy I'm hung out with "if I was a character in Dexter, who would I be?" on a weekly basis. Not kidding. And he'd say "Deborah." And then I'd say "I know." And then I'd smile. hah hashtag-get-a-life

Current Indulgence

I cannot be in the presence of cashews without taking a massive handful. Moderation does not exist and I am not exaggerating. I'm obsessed with the nut and sometimes I turn a blind eye to it when I go to the Bulk Barn. I've turned into one of those shoppers who walks into the Bulk Bark starving, leaves with 2 suppers under her belt (pun). This is not ok.

Unsweetened coconut is my new thing! I love baking with it and could add it to everything if I was allowed. It makes everything taste better and satisifies sugar cravings beyond belief. It's super cheap and I always have a baggy full in my cupboard. A month a go I was on a big strawberry + unsweetened raisins + cashews + unsweetened coconut kick! Dare ya to try it .. Twenty bones says you'll love it :)

Can't say I'm on a Clif kick right now but I have such a weakness for these bars. I would substitute a good ol' Clif in for a steak or big meal any day. They are delicious, have a deadly texture and do not exceed 280-calories/bar (well atleast the ones I've tried). The only downfall is the sugar content.

My 2 Favs - Oatmeal Raisin Walnut & Cool Mint Chocolate

Look at all the delicious flavors there are. I might make it my mission to try all of these during the Christmas season! Yum yum yum! Maple Nut? Peanut Toffee Buzz? White Chocolate? Banana Nut Bread? HELL YESSSSS!!!

get in me, get in me, get in mehhhhh

Current Blessing

My health. It's cliche, I know. But without your health, you don't have much. I have friends and family who struggle with diabetes, cystic fibrosis, bipolar, cancer and the list goes on.

I think we tend to forget how lucky we are to have a clean bill of health (some of us anyway). I take advantage of my own through smoking dirty cigarettes and binge drinking and it's something I could definitely improve.

When we wake up pissy and get rattled that it's a Monday, we should be grateful that we actually woke up. When we dread that awful run at 10-am, we should be grateful that we have our mobility and can run. The list truly goes on. Sometimes we just need to take a moment and be grateful.

Current Slang

"go on bah"
"sure ya knows bah"

I am going through this little phase where I add 'bah' to everything. I commonly use these phrases at work but they've slithered their way into my social life. I think I adopted the word from the 'bahs' at work. Worst kind.

Current Outfit

Lulu hoodie, Paradox leggins (lazy-miss-daisy) and steel-toes! Yee hoo ;)

..face on it like a boot..
(rushing cause it's my break at work)

Current Excitement

I'm excited that Wednesday night is going to be a non-workout night where I can cook, clean and not stress this ol' bod. Perhaps I shall drink tea, blog and wear slippers :)

Current Mood

Happy happy happy :) Positive energy is presperating from me today and I can't say that I have one sprecific reason as to why.

Wednesday workouts that motivate Weekend workouts

So I had the best workout ever tonight! I headed to the gym with Heather after work and did a shoulder/back workout (from my Phase 2 plan), followed by a 9-minute core workout that Heather attempted last week and had to share. You might remember my 25-Minute Core Workout that I posted last week? Well this one is shorter, very effective and can be done at home.

Wednesday Workouts

Shoulders & Back
Dumbbell Shoulder Presses, Dumbbell Side Lateral, Hammer Strength Row

Bent over Rear Delt Flys, Smith Machine behind the back shrugs,
Seated Cable V-bar Rows, Lat Pull-downs (over hand and reverse)
9-Minute Core Workout

1-minute Russian Twists with a 4-kg medicine ball - "God, this isn't hard"
1-minute Toe Touches with a 4-kg medicine ball - "I'm pretty flexible"
1-minute Bicycle Crunches - "My legs are sore.."
1-minute Leg Raises (bring your legs as close to the ground as possible) - "Shit! I can't go low enough"
1-minute Knee Grab Sit-Ups - "Sweet mother!!! We're only half-way through"
1-minute Plank - "My gentle..."

Repeat the above at 30-second intervals!

This workout isn't as easy as it looks. I was a cocky *insert word here* when I started but it beat me out and I sweat like a mother *insert whatever you choose here*

*Note: all you really need for this workout is a stop watch (we used an iPhone) and a yoga mat. We also used a medicine ball but you could still perform the workout without this

-----------------------------------

When I had my weigh-in this past Tuesday and was told I had gained 4-lbs (not a muscle 4-lbs, either), I had quite a wake-up call. I could actually feel my blood pressure rise and my anxiety was on max. I'm trying to stay positive but it's hard when you feel you're doing things right, yet you see no results. I obviously know I was not following my nutrition plan as well as I should have been but I'm still so new to a lot of the information. I'm not trying to make excuses but accepting that you need to consume carbs to restore your body post-workout .. and need to eat as soon as you wake .. and many more key facts are hard to wrap my head around.

I'm super excited to that I'm off this weekend and my goal is to lose that 4-lbs + 1 more (fingers crossed). I have Friday, Saturday and Sunday off and what better way to get my ass in gear than to post all of my fitness plans/all my other productive plans and see what I follow through with, right? Right.

Weekend Plans
  1. Not sleep in past 8:30 am at any point
  2. Complete the 9-minute core workout 2-3 times
  3. Do a hot yoga morning class
  4. Run 7-8 miles
  5. Bike 7-8 miles (gym bike though)
  6. Use the elliptical at least once
  7. Use the cross-ramp at least once
  8. Try Max Fitness Centre gym (I have a free month membership from competing in the Glory Dash)
  9. Complete my leg workout (I'm behind on workouts this week from my Gros Morne vacay)
  10. Do a Shakti yoga class
  11. Drink 7-8 L of water every day
  12. Limit my coffee intake to 2/day (I'm big on coffee when I'm off)
  13. Limit my energy drink consumption to 2 total within the 3 day period
  14. Drop that 4-5 lbs
  15. Bake healthy protein treats for next week
  16. Purchase a foam roller (holy sore muscles here lately)
  17. Stretch for a minimum of 10-minutes every morning upon waking
  18. Get my mother to take some progress pictures and post them
  19. Follow-up on this list come Sunday evening and see a bunch of strike-thru lines
  20. Be able to tell you all how great I feel on Sunday evening :)
I posted a June Goal post a few months back and did a follow-up at the months end. This was actually one of my more popular posts so this week, I will try the same but make a 3-day goal post. Wish me luck :)

Fun Fact (that isn't so fun): Did you know that drinking water while eating your meals can slow down the digestion process? It's actually more beneficial (in my opinion anyway) to drink before and after a meal.

Have you had any great workouts lately?
Any weekend goals/plans?
