Fogo Adventure - Day 1

Greetings from Fogo, guys! Yes, we're finally here and having the most relaxing/touristy excursion ever! It's Thursday night night right now but I probably won't post this until I get back in town but that's ok. I had planned on doing some blogging today but Karla and I didn't stop after our 9:45-am rise *yawn* (Yayy - Sleep in for us).

Anyways, I know you're dying to know about our fun Fogo adventures (slash you're definitely not seeing how this is a low-key trip) but I'll fill you all in anyways .. because I can .. and because I know you're secretly jealous that you're not spending the end of your week on a remote island in Newfoundland where there is fog, wind and rain. O Newfoundland..

We woke this morning to pouring rain. I mean pouring! I came to at around 8 but went back to sleep because rain justifies laziness! (in my opinion). When we crawled out of bed, we headed downstairs for some breakfast. In the common area, we met a couple from Ottawa. They had taken a 2-week trip and were traveling across the east coast of the island. We introduced ourselves over coffee, ate together and then found ourselves sitting for upwards of 45-minutes and discussing funny/scary stories of camping, polar bears and dogs. It's the little things, people ..

After we finished breakfast, we cleaned up and headed out on an adventure. Adventure 1 was to walk to an artist studio that was 3-minutes from the B&B. As soon as we drove 30-seconds and got out of the car, we got back in because the weather was just terrible. Adventure 2. Gallery search!

Karla had told me about an artist named Adam Young who was from Fogo. She had seen some of his work in the past and loved how abstract his paintings were. We found his studio and stopped in only to find out 1. he was a grade 2 school teacher who wasn't at the studio at that time and 2. when he got home that evening he would be getting ready to head out of town. . . so we decided to head for some caffeine.

We grabbed some coffee from the do-it-yourself machine at Island Bake Shop and sat discussing good books and how cool it would be to open a yoga studio in Fogo (big dreamers).

The amount of deserts available was very overwhelming. It shattered my little heart that I couldn't indulge in anything.

So I decided to live vicariously through the enjoyment that Marie and John would have if I delivered them some delicious looking/smelling cinnamon rolls.

After our 'wake-me-up', we ventured out to all the small towns throughout the island. Our first stop was in the community of Fogo.

We took some pictures throughout the drive but it was so ugly outside that a lot of our time was spent in the car. We stopped into the This 'N That store where we picked up some cashews to snack on as we drove, some wild blueberry jam for our friend Blair at work, and I got a sterling silver peace symbol ring. I'm obsessed with the peace symbol ring that my favourite Starbucks worker wears (creepy V) so I knew I had to have it when I saw it.

When we got back on the road, we ventured on an art gallery hunt. First stop, Wesley United Church Art Gallery.

This art gallery was the upstairs of a closed down church. The original paintings on the wall are pastel work done by a lady named Therese Frere. Therese Frere was an artist from Quebec who loved the  artwork of Fogo. She created her work only in pastel and donated many of her originals to this gallery when she was put into a home.

We were both looking for artwork but pastel wasn't our first choice. I did however buy a greeting card for $4.00. Cute, hey?

We then ventured to Heering Cove Art in Shoal Bay. This gallery is owned by Winston and Linda Osmond.

Not only do they sell art work, they sell quilts, home decorations and homemade jams/relishes.

We had passed an art gallery the night before that was large and eye-catching. It had been dark and pouring rain when we drove to the B&B so we really couldn't remember where the gallery was. The lady who answered the door at Adam Young's house told us that there was a gallery in Joe Batt's Arm called Winds and Waves. Ta-daaaa, this was the gallery we had eyed the night before.

The studio had such a collection of items and everything was locally made. They sold hats, mittens, scarves.

Quilts, purses, Christmas ornaments, coasters, jewelery and so much more.

Winds and Waves was by far our favourite gallery and they sold prints by Adam Young.

And we both bought one!! We were actually so excited so I got the lady at the desk to take a picture.
Karla bought 'Crimson Sunset' and I bought 'St. John's Night Scene #1'. His artwork was breath-taking and it actually took us a while to pick our favourite.

*Hashtag ourfirstprint*

We left Winds and Waves with two giant smiles and decided it was time to grab some late lunch/supper so we headed to Nicole's Cafe.

We arrived an hour before the menu was changing for supper so we were limited to what we could ordered. We asked if we could grab a coffee and read our novels while they were in transition and Deb (the hostess) was happy to let us.

I drank three coffee and two water while Ms. Hunter enjoyed a lovely glass of wine.

We sat and read for a while and before we knew it, it was time to order. We were both starving, as we hadn't eaten since breakfast, so everything looked appetizing. I went with the roasted chicken and blueberry almond salad with the mystery vegetable.

And Karla went with the cod and mashed potato, also with the mystery vegetable.

After supper we were pretty lazy so we decided to head back to the B&B for some relaxing and reading.

As per my schedule, I needed to get a workout in so I went with a 25-minute core and conditioning ..

Followed by a little more Jaycee Dugard.

It was getting pretty late (late as in 8-pm) so Karla and I finished up our reading and headed to the Osmond's for a visit. John and Marie weren't home so we made tea and sat with word find puzzles. I mean, c'mon.. when was the last time anyone made time for a good ol' fashion word find? It was great!

Shortly after, John came home and we all sat and chatted and drank tea and told stories and had laughs :) It was beyond great to see that man since I adore his amazing family and consider them my own. He said that Marie was at the club for a birthday so Karla and I ventured up an hour and a half later and played 4 games of pool.

After our 2-2 finish in pool, we decided to head back to read and get some sleep.

Day 1 on Fogo Island was truly awesome! It's hard to find the time to relax and limit all stress in our lives sometimes. Fogo is definitely a getaway that justifies this.

Hope you all had a great Thursday and I shall post our Day-2 adventures sooner than later!

Have you ever been to Fogo Island?
Interested in seeing the place?
Ever consider taking a 2-day getaway to absolutely nothing?

Random Weekly Rant 2.0

So sometimes I just have so much on my mind and so much I'm itching to share with you guys. I posted a Random Weekly Rant 1.0 and added the number in the post title because I enjoyed writing it so much and  figured I could do a 2.0 if the timing was right. Yup, today is one of today was one of those days!

  • I got a "WHERE ARE YOU" text from papa-bear at work the other day. I then got a "Emergency", followed by a phone call and a "come to Karla's office right away! It's important". Know the emergency?

  • When I'm finished training, I've decided that I am going to sit and eat a bag of trail mix and a bag of dried mangos in one sitting. I might also eat a tub of vanilla greek yogurt (though putting a halt on dairy has served me well) and I'm drinking 2-3 club sodas (back-to-back). When my stomach settles, I'm going to Starbucks and getting a fruit & oat cookie and/or a pumpkin spice cookie (do they have those?) and a venti pumpkin spice latte. o-m-f-g
  • I bought that elliptical and have yet to use it / assemble it .. oops?
  • My new addiction is Honey Lemon Tea

on the day of the show at the 2012 NLABBA competition. Kayla
competed last year and walked away with a 4th place medal :)

  • And runs like these are how I plan on getting there

9:31 pace, yes. . . but hills galore! Though it was only a mile and
a half, I've never felt so leg-strong in my life! I can honestly say
that September 10th marks the day of my best run of 2013!

  • I got new glasses last weekend
  • I might wear red lipstick one night when we go out in Halifax! I love red lipstick but I'm a classic 'lipstick-on-teeth' kinda girl. Not attractive
  • This is ridiculous of me to post but I came across a '9 things we should do together' list that myself and a guy I was seeing a while back put together. As expected, I rolled my eyes at myself, said "classic Vic" and then glanced back and said "maybe though.."
    1. Make a list of 10 things we like about each other
    2. Have a fire
    3. Play Yahtzee
    4. Eat in a restaurant that neither of us have eaten before
    5. Make each other a card
    6. Build a fort
    7. Do a 500-pc puzzle
    8. Pick out clothes for the other to wear the next day
    9. Make chocolate covered strawberries
  • My thoughts on the above
    1. I should have someone make a list of 20 things they like about me (cause I'm that likable lovable)
    2. Pff, I've had lots of fires .. I must have been in a camping mood when I wrote that
    3. i.love.yahtzee.times.ten! Now I have an urge to go buy the game (seriously, it's like $7.99 at Walmart)
    4. I'm always game for eating so of course I had this on thee list
    5. Adam (dun dun dunn) used to make cards for me on different occasions. I absolutely fell in love with receiving them
    6. Cause you're never too old and they're so much fun!
    7. I don't have patients for a puzzle .. maybe a 50-pc ..
    8. Love-love-love dressing boys! Le sigh <3 .. No one will be dressing ME in the near future though
    9. I love strawberries and I love chocolate. Bing. Bam. Boom. Voilaaa! (strawberries + chocolate = delicious. Nothing sexual was ever intended for #9 FYI)

  • Someone used my granola recipe and labelled it as Victoria's Granola <3 Next stop .. my own cooking show. I'm thinking I'll call it "Valuable Voods (like foods with a V) w. Victoria"

  • I have a new love for working out in the mancave at Goodlife on Torbay Road. There's something about working out around guys that drives me to work harder. Sad, I know
  • I'm going to do a DIY for fridge magnets soon
  • 2 salad dressings you MUST try

  • done.

Happy Wednesday everyone (post was written on a Tuesday if you notice about post-dated references)

Last Weekend of Summer 2013

Happy 1st week of fall, Friends. I hope everyone had a fab-tastic weekend!

I was on my work turnaround on Friday and Saturday but got asked to work on Sunday. I must say though, I had a great third weekend of September. Can you believe it's fall already? Crazy-cakes! / I love it. Scarves, boots, pumpkin, leaves, crisp air, mittens :) Hellooo!

Did anyone have any good workouts this weekend? My god, I did! I am actually sitting here with a huge smile because I feel lean and light. It's a feeling that does not often follow me.

Anywho, my fall season began as follows..

Friday

I went to bed at 7:00-pm on Thursday night. I was actually so exhausted and pretty much died in my work clothes. I didn't get up until 8:45-am.. Isn't that awesome? I slept almost 14-hours! My godddd! I have a smile on just thinking about it. If this were any other weekend, I'd have a small panic attack but I kinda had it planned for this one. I had a meeting with my coach, Jon on Monday and he seemed rather concerned on my sleeping schedule. He said that I'm never going to see the results I want with  sleeping 4-5-hours a night so he advised me to have a mighty sleep during turnaround. And a mighty sleep it was !

First thing I did was cook me up some breakfast (well quickly whip it  up) .. 1/2 cup of oatmeal, 1 T of ground flax, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/3 cup of egg whites. I mixed this up, let it sit (to soak in the egg whites) and then nuked it for a minute in the microwave. Now, I can see some of those disgusted noses rising to this but it's actually delicious and I eat it almost every day! No joke.

Breakfast wouldn't be breakfast with a Venti Ice Americano now would it? But I'll spare you the picture that bad boy as 1. you all could probably start a coffee scrap book from the copious amounts of coffee-porn I post and 2. I kinda maybe mighta had it guzzled down in this ol gut before I could snap a pic! Oops.

Someone headed to the gym and did a 1-mile interval run followed by what I would consider an intense chest workout! (The chest workout was the 51-minute snap. I stopped the clock when I started running and forgot to turn it back on)

And then ran home to re-fuel with a mandatory protein shake (8-oz water + 1-scoop of Nutriwhey Vanilla Protein Powder), followed by some taco tasting sweet potato bake <--Holy YUM!

Someone also has been carrying her MacBook Pro around in a towel.. Yes, wrapped in a foolish ol' towel in my book bag. It looks quite odd when I plant my ass at Starbucks and whip out my baby size towel and slowly unwrap a computer. These cases are almost 80 bones so I kinda mighta put it off for a few months. Better late than never though, right? Right.

Someone did a little bloggy blogging (here)  and then decided she'd head back to the gym for some core and cardio!

*I shall wake and be a sex-bomb..I shall wake and be a sex-bomb*

Why did I wanna go to the gym twice? O, I don't know .. maybe cause I had a hot-smokin-sexy date planned . . . at Boston Pizza!

David and I decided to have a dinner-movie kinda night so he came up and we ventured on.

I had the spinach salad with a grilled chicken breast and raspberry vinaigrette on the side. I skipped that cheese on the side of my plate. It was feta. I heart feta. But with weakness comes sacrifice, right? (errrr something like that).

David had a starter salad like mine (he gobbled it up before I got a snap) and he ordered the bacon wrapped steak skewers with fried onions.

Tip: Always get your dressing on the side. I order my dressing on the side every time I go out for supper. Simply dip your fork in the dressing and then the salad. You get tons of flavour but save mad calories. You honestly do not need the portion they serve you. (I used approx. 1/4 of the dressing. Not kidding)

Now, you all know a supper isn't a supper without desert .. but what is my favourite desert? O I don't know ... David doesn't know ... O ... wait there for a second ... David does know now..
...Cause he had his FIRST real Starbucks experience! His first step walking into the coffee shop. His first Starbucks Pumpkin Spiced Latte and his first Starbucks gingerbread cookie.

Look at that smile! He is jumping over the moon with his latte, isn't he? (Apologies for the enthusiasm here ... I'm a tad hyper her tonight) O, ps. I had a black blonde roast coffee.

It was too late for a movie after supper + coffee so we opted for a rental. We went to Philly's (seeing how it's just up the road) and debated for a good 15-minutes on what to rent. We pick a movie and the conversation between myself and the clerk-girl went as follows:

Clerk: Number please.
Queen-Bee V: 763-shhh
Clerk: O, you don't have an account with us?
Queen-Bee V: Nope
Clerk: Where do you live? hmm *sketchy face ON*
Queen-Bee V: Bell's Turn
Clerk: O .. ya .. ok, so I can't rent to you
Queen-Bee V: Ahh excuse me? ha-ha-ha-why not?
Clerk: Cause you don't live in Airport Heights
Queen-Bee V: Are you serious???????
Clerk: Ya, we only rent to those living in APH. Sorry. Bye *he-he-he*
Queen-Bee V: RIGHT ON

*Victoria flicks her long lushious locks of hair and struts out with her angry face on*
Note: I even put back the almonda I was gonna get.

RATTLED! So the movie date was a no-go..buttt we got to bed at a decent hour and woke up to the birds!

No movie..no almonds..but I got berries?

Ps. Look what a lovely friend picked all for me-me-me

Goodbye Costco steroidal blueberries! This is a 2-L ice cream tub. Talk about get-in-ma-belly.

Idea: Think about this combo .. almonds + blueberries + 1T of almond butter + shredded coconut + 1T of honey .. sound delish? Ahh I think so. I'm thinking out loud here guys.. but I'll put that in the books to try. Perhaps you'll try it? And then enlighten me?

Saturday

Saturday started like every other day but today I added some blueberries to my fuel-mix!

And then headed to the gym for a little cardio and a LOT of weights. I did circuit training for almost an hour and a half and sweat more than I've ever sweat before!

After lunch I decided to meet up with Val at Montana's. I ordered the watermelon feta salad (hold the feta) and altered it to my allowances. This salad was holy yum and the balsamic vinaigrette whipped across the top was to die for! Val and I had our hearty little lunch and then headed to the mall.

After the mall I took a nap, got all dolled up and headed out for some birthday celebrations :)

Val made Shaneen this giant cookie cake and it actually took everything in me not to eat it! Holy smokes did it ever look delish! I told Val that she should make me a personal cookie cake for the end of September. She accepted and I decided that it will definitely be eaten in one sitting.

I only stayed out on Saturday until around 12 because I had an early rise. Saturday was the 8-week mark from the November competition (you have no idea the nerves I have) so I needed to get some sleep so I could workout Sunday evening.

I was pretty excited to go to bed on Saturday night because I knew I had some progress pictures to take on Sunday.

The following are a little embarrassing/graphic/hashtag-naked .. but that's the territory with a public blog I supposed.

Week 1                                 Week 7

Verdict: I thought I'd see a more of a change after 6-7-weeks but all this means is that I really have to get into game mode now. I need to start taking this more seriously and no cheating/cutting meals/lacking sleep/not giving 100% overall.

Note: When this is done, I will post ALL of my progress pictures. Some are still a little heart-breaking for me to look at haha

Anyhow, all in all I had a fantastic weekend :) Great food and great friends all around.

Happy last week of September, friends!

Did you get up to anything fun this weekend? Any good stories? Workouts?

Send me some motivation! :)
